Jimbocho Named the World’s Coolest Neighbourhood (Time Out, 2025)

The Tokyo district of Jimbocho, home to Kyoritsu Women’s University, has been ranked No. 1 on Time Out magazine’s list of “the 39 coolest neighbourhoods in the world in 2025”.

Time Out is a well-known lifestyle and culture magazine founded in London, with local editions in cities around the world. Its annual ranking highlights neighbourhoods that reflect creativity, community, and a distinctive local atmosphere.

This month, in its 2025 feature, Time Out praised Jimbocho for its character and charm, noting that “It’s home to some 130 second-hand bookstores, most of them housed in low, slightly antiquated mixed-use buildings they share with old-school coffeeshops and curry houses.” Surrounded by universities and publishers, the area has long been known as Tokyo’s “book town,” where literary culture meets student life and tradition blends with modern urban energy.

For students and faculty at Kyoritsu Women’s University, this recognition is a reminder that our campus stands at the heart of a neighbourhood now celebrated worldwide for its culture, learning, and sense of community.
